Cooking with the Metric System

Leah just put an angel food cake in the oven. This is a BIG DEAL. Because my 11 year old daughter made her very first angel food cake using the metric system version of the recipe AND using a wire whisk. We don't have a stand mixer and our hand mixer wasn't functional. She separated all the eggs, let the egg whites come to room temp, and then went to use the hand mixer and a bunch of dust and cat hair fell out of it and ruined her egg whites. The child had to start all over again. She didn't want to risk another mishap (this was an old old hand mixer which we had never used for cooking and which sat in the Papermaking bin) so she used a whisk for round 2. She whisked from 1:30 to 2 pm, checking the pictures of each step to see what it was supposed to look like when soft peaks formed.

Now she's washing dishes and Natalie is experimenting with blending primary colors to make secondaries in her new set of Lyra Rembrandt Aquarell watercolor pencils from A Child's Dream Come True (she has the 12 piece set, which Amazon doesn't seem to carry). I got them when I got our next set of MLB's. Zac is peacefully napping in his crib and I'm sewing a patch on the knee of Becca's jeans.

This isn't Leah's first foray into the metric system. I had her make a vintage chocolate chip cookie recipe as well. They turned out GREAT! And I introduced it with All in Just One Cookie

She uses a different recipe but the list of ingredients is exactly the same, and it gave Leah a tour around the world and an idea of where the ingredients in her cookies may have come from. She loved it. And for our angel food cake recipe? We read the delightful Mr. Angelo

UPDATE: Timer just dinged, cake just came out of the oven and it is perfect. Good job Leah!!!!!!
