Old Testament Stories I

Doing the Old Testament Stories with students in person, we can spend the whole first block just in painting the Days of Creation. That is so beautiful and amazing and satisfying! I have notes organized on my website as well as a blog post with the paintings I did with Gail McManus, if you'd like to see them. However, this go-round I am doing the block over Zoom with a tutoring client, and we can't realistically do painting together. So I combined the stories in a different way, and it will be two blocks intead of threee. I expect to use Jakob Streit's stories primarily. All three of his books are on the Online Waldorf Library (completely for free), which is a great resource!

And There Was Light: From the Creation of the World to Noah's Ark (AZ)

Journey to the Promised Land: The Path of the People of Israel from Abraham's Calling to David's Dream (AZ)

We Will Build a Temple: The Path of Israel from King Solomon to John the Baptist (AZ)

And There Was Light: From the Creation of the World to Noah's Ark (OWL)

Journey to the Promised Land: The Path of the People of Israel from Abraham's Calling to David's Dream (OWL)

We Will Build a Temple: The Path of Israel from King Solomon to John the Baptist (OWL)

Here are the stories I used:

Wednesday, October 7 - The Creation

We didn't do this but there's a lovely art project in MaryAnn Kohl's Storybook Art that is inspired by the book Light. It works best, in my mind, if you have one of those little Montessori tack punchers and the accompanying felt mats. Natalie did the art for the front cover of her Renaissance book that way, so that it looked light breaking through the darkness of the Middle Ages.

Thursday, October 8 - The Fall

We didn't do this but there is a watercolor painting for Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden in Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools: Classes 1 - 8 by Thomas Wildgruber, p.163.

Friday, October 9 - Cain and Abel

  • read from And There Was Light

    "Cain and Abel" on p.35

"Cain Conquers the Wolf" on p.37

    "When Eve Wept" on p.39

"How Cain Slew Abel" on p.41

"Adam Buries Abel in the First Grave on Earth" on p.43

"Seth, the New Brother of Cain" on p.44

"An Angel Reveals the Book of Life to Adam" on p.45

    "Adam's Death" on p.46

Monday, October 12 - Young Noah

  • read from And There Was Light

    "Old Methusala" on p.85

"Where Is the House of the Righteous?" on p.86

    "Noah's Birth" on p.87

"The Child Noah's Anger" on p.87

"The City of a Hundred Idols" on p.89

    "The Command" on p.91

"The King with the Black Crown" on p.91

"Raphael Guides Noah to the Book of Life" on p.93

We didn't do this but there are instructions for a watercolor painting of young Noah smashing the idol. He is standing by Methusala with a stone hammer in his hand and the huge stone idol is staring down at them. It is in Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools: Classes 1 - 8 by Thomas Wildgruber, p.166.

Monday, October 12 - Noah and the Ark

I told my student that I had a short version of the next story with absolutely beautiful illustrations (Noah's Ark is a Caldecott Honor book) and a long version of this story that was filled with lots of interesting details, and she could choose between them. She asked for both! So we read the picture today to preview the more extended version of the tale tomorrow.

Tuesday, October 13 - Noah and the Ark

  • read from And There Was Light

"The Commandment to Build the Ark" on p.94

"Sem, Ham, Jafet, and the Animals" on p.95

"Will the Ark Be Destroyed?" on p.95

    "Gathering the Animals" on p.97

    "Entering the Ark" on p.98

    "Adam's Casket" on p.100

"The Ark is Sealed and the Rain Begins to Fall" on p.100

    "The Flood" on p.101

"Distress in the Ark" on p.103

    "Raven-Flight and Dove-Message" on p.104

    "The New World" on p.105

"The Offering of Thanks" on p.106

"Sem and the Angels" on p.107

Wednesday, October 14 - The Tower of Babel

It is really fun to choose a word and look it up in many languages using Google Translate, then create an MLB page of the words.

We didn't do this but there is a watercolor painting for an angel saving Abraham from the fire ("Abram and Nimrod" chapter) in Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools: Classes 1 - 8 by Thomas Wildgruber, p.168.

Thursday, October 15 - Lot's Wife

  • read from Journey to the Promised Land

"Abram Journeys to Canaan" on p.20

"Visit of the Three Men" on p.26

"The Destruction of the City of Sodom" on p.27

For the star-filled sky that Abraham looks up to, use an old tooth brush to spatter white paint on dark blue paper.

Friday, October 16 - The Binding of Isaac

Monday, November 2 - Jacob and Esau

For a recipe for Jacob's Lentil Stew, I like this one.

Monday, November 2 - Jacob's Ladder

If you have the wooden toy Jacob's Ladder, it is fun to get that out.

Tuesday, November 3 - Leah and Rachel

My favorite film adaptation of this is part I of The Story of Jacob and Joseph (now happily avaialable to stream on Amazon Prime).

Wednesday, November 4 - Joseph's Coat of Many Colors

Wednesday, November 4 - Potiphar's Wife

Thursday, November 5 - Pharaoh's Dream

We didn't do this but there is a watercolor painting for the dreams -- and the destiny -- of the cupbearer and the baker in Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools: Classes 1 - 8 by Thomas Wildgruber, p.172.

Friday, November 6 - The Years of Famine

My favorite film adaptation of this is part II of The Story of Jacob and Joseph (now happily avaialable to stream on Amazon Prime).
