We Will Build a Temple: The Path of Israel from King Solomon to John the Baptist (AZ)
And There Was Light: From the Creation of the World to Noah's Ark (OWL)
Here are the stories I used:
Wednesday, October 7 - The Creation
- read The Dreamer by Cynthia Rylant
- read Light: The First Seven Days retold by Sarah Waldman
We didn't do this but there's a lovely art project in MaryAnn Kohl's Storybook Art that is inspired by the book Light. It works best, in my mind, if you have one of those little Montessori tack punchers and the accompanying felt mats. Natalie did the art for the front cover of her Renaissance book that way, so that it looked light breaking through the darkness of the Middle Ages.
Thursday, October 8 - The Fall
- look at Genesis, Chapter 1, Verses 1-5 in Hebrew writing (page 2 of And There Was Light: From the Creation of the World to Noah's Ark)
- read from And There Was Light
"The World's Beginning" on p.7
"The Creation of Man" on p.28
"The Seventh Day" on p.29
"In Paradise" on p.31
"The Fall" on p.32
"On Earth" on p.34
We didn't do this but there is a watercolor painting for Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden in Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools: Classes 1 - 8 by Thomas Wildgruber, p.163.
Friday, October 9 - Cain and Abel
- read from And There Was Light
"Cain and Abel" on p.35
"Cain Conquers the Wolf" on p.37
"When Eve Wept" on p.39
"How Cain Slew Abel" on p.41
"Adam Buries Abel in the First Grave on Earth" on p.43
"Seth, the New Brother of Cain" on p.44
"An Angel Reveals the Book of Life to Adam" on p.45
"Adam's Death" on p.46
Monday, October 12 - Young Noah
- read from And There Was Light
"Old Methusala" on p.85
"Where Is the House of the Righteous?" on p.86
"Noah's Birth" on p.87
"The Child Noah's Anger" on p.87
"The City of a Hundred Idols" on p.89
"The Command" on p.91
"The King with the Black Crown" on p.91
"Raphael Guides Noah to the Book of Life" on p.93
We didn't do this but there are instructions for a watercolor painting of young Noah smashing the idol. He is standing by Methusala with a stone hammer in his hand and the huge stone idol is staring down at them. It is in Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools: Classes 1 - 8 by Thomas Wildgruber, p.166.
Monday, October 12 - Noah and the Ark
- read Noah's Ark by Jerry Pinkney
I told my student that I had a short version of the next story with absolutely beautiful illustrations (Noah's Ark is a Caldecott Honor book) and a long version of this story that was filled with lots of interesting details, and she could choose between them. She asked for both! So we read the picture today to preview the more extended version of the tale tomorrow.
Tuesday, October 13 - Noah and the Ark
- read from And There Was Light
"The Commandment to Build the Ark" on p.94
"Sem, Ham, Jafet, and the Animals" on p.95

"The New World" on p.105
"The Offering of Thanks" on p.106
"Sem and the Angels" on p.107
Wednesday, October 14 - The Tower of Babel
- read from Journey to the Promised Land: The Path of the People of Israel from Abraham's Calling to David's Dream
"King Nimrod" on p.7
"The Tower of Babel" on p.9
"The Birth of Abraham" on p.10
"Abram and Nimrod" on p.16
"The Confusion of Tongues" on p.18
It is really fun to choose a word and look it up in many languages using Google Translate, then create an MLB page of the words.
