Hawai'i Booklist

I did a very long post previously about Oceania, which I'd like to tie in with 6th grade Astronomy (via Celestial Navigation), but here I would just like to compile all the resources I've collected which are specifically about Hawai'i.

When Captain James Cook Landed on Hawai'i

The Age of Discovery by Charles Kovacs doesn't include anything at all about Captain James Cook (1728-1779), most likely because it didn't seem like it would be particularly important to Scottish students. However, American students, who are ultimately going to run into Hawai'i becoming the 50th state, do need to have its "discovery" mentioned in the Age of Exploration.

So I am collecting resources to have on hand for later. I'm particularly interested in possibly using this as an opportunity to work more with primary sources, since Cook was known for his detailed notetaking. However, we will definitely need to use some SHEG materials first, so students know to be aware of some of the problems (like bias) that arise with primary sources.

Board Game Wishlist

I have a fantastic collection of fun and educational board games, but I always love to hear what other teachers and homeschool parents recommend! On Sunday I visited with my friend Anna, who is closing down her microschool and has offered to sell me her stash of unused MLBs. 60!

Of course we got to chatting, and she shared some of her students' favorite board games with me. So here are the notes I took of things I plan to buy:

Three Sticks

Planet

Paint Chip Poetry

I would love other recommendations! Feel free to leave a comment!
