Tactile Diagrams

Studying Magritte and Surrealism, and looking up my old notes for The Persistence of Memory and tactile diagrams, got me re-interested in this fascinating world of creating new versions of art pieces for students who cannot see.

I also realized, while looking for more examples of tactile diagrams, that Science, Geography, and Math lessons need to be able to be presented through tactile graphics as well. Think textbook diagrams (such as the four chambers of the heart), world maps, and mathematical charts and graphs.

Here are some interesting things I discovered:

We study maps first in Grade 4 Local History & Geography in Waldorf, and revisit them during the Age of Exploration in Grade 7. It would be nice in either or both of those blocks to share something about maps that can be read with the fingertips!

MMA - René Magritte

This summer a tutoring client and I are going through the Magnificent Modern Art course from Art History Kids together. It's been really interesting so far. Art History isn't something I ever really learned about, so it's new to me. And so, of course, I'm going to keep some notes here as we go along!

Last week it was the Harlem Renaissance and the artist Elizabeth Catlett.

This week we are studying

other notes (my suggestions)

Sadly, I don't have swell paper or a heat diffusing machine... but I did once have a very old photocopier machine in my classroom that actually gave us a textured paper when we printed this out! It was wonderful for the kids to experience. If I had known that all photocopiers don't give the same result I would have printed a hundred so that I always had them for future classes!

Hervé Tullet

I am so excited! When I was searching my house for books written all in capital letters (for kids to read between Waldorf grade 1 and grade 2), a friend cleverly suggested I check in my board book collection. And I found out that all four of the books I had by Hervé Tullet are all in caps!

Here's the list of Books Written in ALL CAPS I've found so far. As of right now, there are 20.

But hopefully that list is about to get longer because I want to check out everything Tullet has written. I love his work and have been planning on making a master list of his titles for a long while now. Today is the day!

To make it easier to ensure I don't miss a title, I'm going to put them in alphabetical order:

A lot of these out of print books are used on Amazon for outrageous prices but are perfectly reasonable when you look for them on eBay. The Big Book of Art was listed as $119.38 on Amazon but I got it on eBay for $21.23.

There are two board games. One is Za Za Zoom! A Game of Imagination. The other is called Ready, Set, Draw! A Game of Creativity and Imagination. It looks like the instructions for that are all in caps, so I'm going to get it.

There are also a significant number of Tullet's titles which haven't yet been translated into English, such as
