Magic Tricks!

Part 2 of Science Club this year is Magic Tricks. I'm nervous about this one, but the kids are very very excited!!! Here goes!


Thu Jan 30

    Magic Tube
    two sheets of paper, tape, scissors, glue stick, ribbon

    we also played jacks to help the children build their dexterity!


Thu Feb 6

    The Clipped Card
    five playing cards, glue, colored paper clip
    (4 numbered cards of one color + 1 face card of the other color)

    The Straw
    two identical straws, scissors

    Coin Vanish I
    colored construction paper cut into 7 1/2 x 1 inch strips, coin
    (2 paper strips each of 2 colors, 4 strips in all)


Thu Feb 13

    The Impossible Balance
    two cards, glue stick, clear plastic cup
    (any cards work; I'm using some from our extra copy of Concept)

    Water into Ice
    clear plastic cup, mug, sponge, scissors, ice cubes, water
    (for an "ice plant" version, use a small plant pot instead of a mug)

    Candy Trick (Pompom Trick)
    four paper cups, scissors, pompoms

    Candy Trick (Tennis Ball Trick; use variation from comments)
    5 children, tennis ball, deck of cards
    (before starting, have one audience member choose an even # card from the deck and one an odd # card -- then use even #, 1, odd #)

    Drawing Duplication
    marker, blank magic cards

    I gave each child 30

    for the tutorial it's nice to use one regular playing card and the rest blank cards, so they can better see the card manipulation

    (because you will move the card to the top or bottom, cut the deck before handing it to them so their card will be back in the middle)

    Sharpie, scissors, tape, black thread, piece of cardstock (for anchor)

    "The Spooky Silk" from Spooky Magic
    silk handkerchief, scissors, black thread, piece of cardstock, pencil
    (draw diagram of trick on card/anchor, fold and place in your sock)

Thu May 15

    Air Pressure Trick
    small glass jar, playing card, water

    Dry Napkin
    small glass jar, large container, water, paper towel, pen

    3 Paper Loops
    9 x 12 construction paper, pencil, ruler, scissors, tape
    (make marks at 1 1/2, 3, 4 1/2, 6, 7 1/2 inches)
    (tape 3 strips together; you get two loops from each sheet of paper)

We have 15 sessions set aside for this topic, so they will have plenty of tricks to put on a full Magic Show for their family & friends by the end of it!

Each child is creating a list of all the tricks that they have learned (to keep in their box of props). And they can look back at the videos too if needed.
