Science Titles for Young Readers

In February 2020 I wrote a blog post exolling the virtues of vintage Science and Nature I CAN READ books (and listing the titles), but I know that they can be hard to find and expensive because they're out of print. I do think they are very much worth tracking down! Another vintage author I love is Robert McClung, and in October 2020 I made a list of his books as well.

I am happy to share that I got a book from the Elementary Explorers series by Victoria Blakemore as a part of an African Animals study with a 9 year old, and I thought it was well done. They're modern and reasonably priced. Nonfiction, 36 pages, full color photos, glossary in the back for terms in bold print. Each title is $5.99. This is a series I wouldn't mind investing in for when my child is looking for books with large print, lots of white space between the lines, and many pictures. Of course, now I need to make a list of the animal books in her series. She has some really interesting choices!

These are all modern animals. If your 6-9 year old child is doing the Montessori Second Great Lesson (the Timeline of Life) and looking for info on prehistoric animals that is not too difficult to read, I strongly recommend this Geologic Time and Fossils Set available at Montessori Services. As Montessori teachers, we find it hard to find resources for the Geologic Periods of Time that are written at this reading level, because public schools don't cover it until students are much older. The people at Fossilicious are a lifesaver!
