"Maketh"

Our spelling words this week are

  • make
  • made
  • making
and so that was the focus of today's SWI lesson.

We started by reading The Contest: An Armenian Folktale retold and illustrated by Nonny Hogrogian, our artist of the month.

Then we used The hfw Project Study Booklet #3 to help us understand our first two high frequency words (after studying < make > we could just use our suffixing convention flowcharts to understand the spelling of making).

We boxed the base, circled the graphemes, learned about markers, and tap-spelled the word. We looked at the IPA, the etymology of the words, and their phonemes. We played the meaning game where we identified family members, cousins, and foils (which we call "strangers"). The children also challenged themselves to correctly spell each word with their eyes closed!

All of the printable student worksheets for these words are found in Study Booklet #3, but you can also find a quick overview of each high frequency word in Rebecca and Fiona's new book, The High Frequency Word Project.

I think that < made > was the most interesting word to study. The children were really surprised to learn that Middle English had the word makede. We also talked about maketh. I had two picture books of Psalm 23 with modern language, but when we checked my great-grandparents' Bible, we found the word maketh!

This Bible was a given as gift to my great-grandparents on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1967. It is also the King James version, which explains the older language. The children found it really interesting!
