State Reports

Fifth grade in Waldorf includes North American Geography (or whatever your home continent is). I don't think there's anything wrong with doing state reports, especially if we are still doing distance learning at that time. One year when I did this study with older children, we did U.S. Territory reports, since they already knew all 50 states. That was really interesting as well.

I think a really good starting point for a state report is the Discover America State by State alphabet book series. We have the Illinois one, L is for Lincoln, which I purchased in preparation for the Local History & Geography block since it has a picture of the Tully monster, our state fossil. It includes lots of state symbols, and a bit of state history. Overall, a nice snapshot. Now I'm working with some children in California on studying the Timeline of Life, and I started wondering about the fossils in their state. So I checked the description of G is for Golden and found that the book includes "the world's largest find of Ice Age fossils at the La Brea Tar Pits." Perfect!

I bought the California book, and I'm expecting that this school year when my students get to state reports I'll purchase the books for the states they are interested in. I doubt that my homeschool co-op needs all 50 volumes. However, just so that I have the links to all of them handy, here's the list.
