List of Shelters 2023

Mid-October to mid-November, the Bobcats did their Quality of Numbers block, and they are now starting their first Capital Letters block. I promise that I'm working hard to get caught up on my notes for weeks 9 and 10!

The Bongos wrapped up Clocks & Calendars at the end of October and then began their Shelters block. This is a classic Waldorf grade 3 topic and I have taught it many times. There are lots of picture books about Houses Around the World -- because there are so many ways to make your home -- and it's always really hard to narrow down the list to just a few for us to learn about.

Here is my planned list of Shelters for 2023 and some helpful resources. We began our block by looking at a few unusual schools:

#1 - Steamboat School
Mississippi River, North America

#2 - Rain School
Chad (Africa)

For more on interesting kinds of schools, I recommend Off to Class: Incredible and Unusual Schools Around the World by Susan Hughes.

I also really like My Librarian is a Camel: How Books Are Brought to Children Around the World by Margriet Ruurs.

On to houses:

#3 - Wigwam & Longhouse
Northeastern US, North America

#4 - Baobab Tree
Sudan (Africa)

#5 - Cave Dwelling
Spain & Turkey (Europe)

#6 - Floating House
Netherlands (Europe)

#7 - Tulou
China (Asia)

#8 - Aboriginal Bark Hut
Australia

#9 - Iglu
Polar Regions, North America

#10 - Research Station
Antarctica

#11 - Shabono
Brazil (South America)

#12 - Palafito
Chile (South America)

#13 - Dogtrot Log House
Southeastern US, North America

#14 - Ger
Mongolia (Asia)
