The Chalk Game

Introducing.... the chalk game!!

This school year, Grammar has been a VERY big theme. We learned the Montessori Grammar Symbols and used them to symbolize the parts of speech in sentences, wrote and performed a Grammar-themed Class Play, and practiced Sentence Analysis.

How Montessori Teaches Grammar

symbolized labels for the foods at the play reception!

We also started a daily Editing practice with a sentence or two on the board from Fix It! Grammar by IEW (the Instutite for Excellence in Writing). We are working on Level Three: Robin Hood. Here's a Student Sample (PDF).

children can either erase and fix the sentence,
or use the editor's marks to show errors

IEW doesn't use the Montessori approach, but I've added in a way that we can continue with the color coding. Colored chalk!

To play the chalk game, each child takes a turn to close their eyes and choose a piece of Montessori colored chalk from the basket. Then they find a word in the passage and underline it in the correct color.
