The Newbery Medal

One of my projects this year is to gather a complete collection of all the Caldecott and Newbery Medal winning books for our school. Today I looked through our chapter books to find the Newbery winners. We had only about a dozen! So that is definitely a goal requiring swift action.

I had someone contact me to say that they were starting up a new school and what were my suggestions for books? I have to say that you can't do better than beginning with the Caldecott and Newbery medal winners and honor books. Powell's Books, an outstanding online used bookstore with a physical presence in Portland Oregon, has special sections on their website where you can shop for Newbery medal winners and Caldecott medal winners. Build your collection at a reduced price! At our school, we ask parents who donate used books to the local used bookstore to ask for the credit to be placed on our account instead of theirs. This allows the teachers to go in every once and a while and shop at no cost to the school. This has allowed us to grow our library very quickly and whoever first suggested the idea is, to my mind, a genius!

The Newbery Medal is awarded to the year's most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The medal is presented by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The ALSC website (Association for Library Service to Children) also has lists of winners of other distinguished medals including Batchelder, Carnegie, Geisel, Odyssey, Wilder, et al.

Whew! Well, it took me many days but I finally have created a complete list of live links to all these titles. Let the shopping begin!!! Actually, I was quite glad to find a biography of Audubon in the list of Newbery honor books, since he is our Great Artist for October. So I promptly bought a copy of the book.

Hope this list is helpful!
