Here are some notes from our third week of Zoology I, where we focused on the Social Insects!
Monday, January 21
- review Fish and Earthworm, review Friday's drawing assignment (drawing the form of trunk animals by drawing their habitats)
- look at Pygmy Seahorse fact file card from the Coral Reef Habitat Mat and discuss this differently-shaped fish whose shape is also dictated in a very specific way by its permanent habitat
- look at Earthworm leaf and fact file card from the Tree of Life, read earthworm facts
- read list of fish included in Douglas Florian's in the swim, review list of fish included in the Coral Reef Habitat Mat, let students choose fish
- add The Earthworm and The Fish to MLB
- read "The Termite" from page 38 of Douglas Florian's insectlopedia, explain term "social insects"
- watch portions of David Attenborough's Life in the Undergrowth

- finish up earthworm and fish miscellany: look at information about the largest earthworm in the world in Steve Jenkin's Actual Size, watch PBS video Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage
- look at Carpenter Bee leaf and fact file card from the Tree of Life, explain term Hymenoptera
- read "The Social Insects," pages 47-49 of Klocek
- review termite, look at giant anteater information in Steve Jenkin's What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?
- watch all of episode 5, Supersocieties, from Life in the Undergrowth by David Attenborough
- give students time to brainstorm their Termite and Ant main lesson book pages, share suggested resources from the classroom
