Book Share Sep 9

Our quick social check-in once a week to see what everyone's reading and if they would recommend it. I love to see the different variety of books shared by kids of all ages! All homeschoolers 4-18 are welcome to join us via Zoom.

The books we talked about this week were

The Flying Beaver Brothers and the Evil Penguin Plan (book #1)

by Maxwell Eaton III

Madeline

by
Ludwig Bemelmans

Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth (book #1)

by Judd Winick

Ten True Tales: The Secret Agent and Other Spy Kids

by Allan Zullo

The Tale of Meshka the Kvetech

by Carol Chapman

GUYKU: A Year of Haiku for Boys

by
Bob Rackza

Guts

by Raina Telgemeier

Although we really enjoyed the poetry in it, the kids did raise some questions about the boy stereotypes in Guyku. I think they were searching for the poems to be more universal. I do agree with them that it would have been nice to see some non-traditional images, like a boy wearing pink or playing with dolls. Two books that spring to my mind, as consciously trying to break open these stereotypes, are What Mommies Do Best / What Daddies Do Best by Laura Numeroff and William's Doll by Charlotte Zolotow.
