Even if there are things I own that I won't choose for him right away, the first step is always to collect! I may end up with an older student who has an interest in this topic later on and I'll be glad that the legwork is done.
In my home this would be a physical pile -- usually in the stairwell so that I can sort it into subcategories, with different categories on different steps -- but I also always put things in the blog so that I can find the list later, even when the books have all been put back away.
