The content is not so much (a few facts about each artist), but it could serve to get kids curious about Art History. I'm really inspired by the concept of it.
We are actually scheduled to do none of these artists in the coming years, but I had the great idea of placing it on the coffee table after we finish Dale Chihuly this year and referring back to it when we do our artists next year... by making donut artwork each month inspired by THEIR styles!
Can't you just imagine donut art created by
-
Piet Mondrian
Louise Bourgeois
Sister Corita Kent
Yves Klein
Faith Ringgold
Zaha Hadid (a donut-shaped building!)
Andy Goldsworthy
Marianthe Loucataris
I LOVE THIS IDEA! If you're not familiar with the work of Marianthe Loucataris, she does digital sound art. What a fun way to interpret a donut!
I'm super-excited about teaching Art History as a weekend club next year, in addition to our time during the week. This donut art show could be amazing!
UPDATE
with
some brainstorming for the show:
Piet Mondrian
- squared donut with strong black lines and blocks of primary colors plus white and black (craft foam pieces)
also include geoboard activity
Louise Bourgeois
- Cell Design activity from Tate Kids (using an old dog crate as the cell) with baking tools and the ingredients for making donuts
- HAVE A GO
Plan a "cell" of your own. What would you put in it? Would you fill it with things from your home?
If you stepped inside your "cell" would you feel happy or scared? Surprised or angry?
OR
an enormous black wire spider standing over a donut
(this display is very striking when placed on a large mirror)
OR
a glove, stuffed to look like a disembodied hand, holding a stuffed fabric donut
OR
photos of the children holding donuts, with the quote about childhood and her own picture as a child
Corita Kent
- Christmas tree display
with donut ornaments and other foods
Yves Klein
- ultramarine blue donut painting
also include mix-your-own-blue activity
Faith Ringgold
- donut quilt square w/sequins and bugle beads for sprinkles
I like these free donut coloring pages that could make good patterns
a Biscornu pincushion also looks quite a bit like a donut and looks so fun to make!
Zaha Hadid
- painting and/or model of a donut-shaped building
Andy Goldsworthy
- ice ring
OR
a "rain shadow" of a donut made with a cardboard template, a small chalkboard, and a spray bottle of water
Marianthe Loucataris
- mixed media / five senses:
see - strawberry artwork (strawberry punch red paper with black dots, bubble wrap printed strawberry, strawberry paper craft)
smell/touch - strawberry frosting play dough (one container strawberry frosting + enough flour to get the texture you want)
hear - recording of the children describing strawberry memories
taste - add fresh sliced strawberries to our Art Show Reception!
Reception Foods - donuts, fresh sliced strawberries, orange juice, coffee
