we are going to study SIUC professor Buckminster Fuller as well this month

Design at Southern Illinois University: R. Buckminster Fuller

Everything is Design (PDF)

- she formed a lifelong friendship with visionary architect R. Buckminster Fuller, who once described her as one of the greatest artists he knew

- he designed her wedding ring

- she saw him raise his first geodesic dome

- one of her monumental sculptures hung in Bucky and Anne's Carbondale IL home

lots of Nature walks would make sense when studying this artist... love her quote!

Here is the lesson from SF MOMA that Lotus recommends. The video goes with these step-by-step instructions.

However, I don't like this video AT ALL because it is nothing like Ruth Asawa's techinque. I think that our crochet single-line-drawing is much closer to her work, and the class enjoyed experimenting with it, so I'd like to expand upon that and let the children try to "loop" with wire. We have plenty of it left over from Alexander Calder!

I love the "knotless netting" images in the article below:
Ruth Asawa and the Mythical Basketmaker of Mexico

And, in fact, we will be learning how to tie nets in Norse Mythology this Spring (Loki), so this will lay an interesting foundation for that!

for my oldest student, who is studying U.S. History (which Waldorf does in 8th grade), we will return to the life of Ruth Asawa when we get to Japanese Internment in the Second World War

week of Jan 2:

week of Jan 9:

Monday - make designs in dirt with bare feet

Thursday - Art History Kids - Magnificent Modern Art Course
    week 2 video & assignment

    Continuous Line Drawing

it would also be fun to do a continuous line drawing 3-D with a crochet hook and some undyed natural fiber yarn (or this may be a good use for the raffia someone donated and I've never used)... just keep going in and out of your own work until you feel like being done

week of Jan 16:

week of Jan 30:

Monday - special guest for Unitarian Universalism
in preparation for Buckminster Fuller field trip (tour of Dome Home)

Tuesday - field trip cancelled due to ice storm

week of Feb 6:

week of April 10:

    rescheduled Dome Home field trip

NOTE: we will also plan to visit the Climatron at the Missouri Botanical Garden in May when we study Dale Chihuly

Week Ten Photos

These photos go with the post Week Ten Notes (Nov 7 - Nov 10).

Zac and I were recovering from COVID so this week was slower and quieter.

Subtraction Secrets #10
with a handful of pinecones

after I read a poem version of "The Fox and the Grapes," Zac went running off to his bedroom and proudly came back with volume A of his encyclopedia

A is for Aesop

sketching Autumn leaves
and looking through our Prismacolors to find the perfect color

Autumn brings all kinds of beautiful colors!

we decide to set up a "Track Trap" to try to capture some animal footprints

for best results, we set up two locations

we couldn't really tell if we captured any tracks

so they decided on a new setup, a cookie sheet of flour

which has been carefully smoothed out

Addition Adventures #4
with the Mortensen material

we find the missing addend in this way:

"14 is having a party and 5 wants to come.
Who does he need to bring with him?"

"17 is having a party and 9 wants to come.
Who does he need to bring with him?"

then the children choose the piece which, when added to 9, will be the same length as 17

Riddle: Why shouldn’t you tell secrets in the garden?

on Wednesday morning the children rush to the Track Trap
and we find footprints!

we continue the process of sketching Autumn leaves
two new leaves today... ginkgo and Japanese maple

all of our math is differentiated... here's a first grader's lesson

and an eighth grader's lesson
from NOAA's "Data in the Classroom" program

in Circle Time the Pterodactyls practice skip counting by 5s up to and back down from 100

I set up the first Place Value lesson
which is a trail of 100 green gems, 10 blue organza bags, and 1 red basket

in Montessori,
green = units place
blue = tens place
red = hundreds place

at the end of the trail the children will find the hundredth gem, which will go into the tenth bag, which will go into the red basket and thus show 100

they love walking the trail and counting the gems one by one

each set of ten gems is carefully placed into a blue bag

the blue bags begin to accumulate so friends help with the carrying

9 bags of 10 gems = 90

100!

in Science Club, we try to invent a new thermometer
(which does not work)

first we test to see how long it takes water to wick its way to the bottom edge of a coffee filter

and then we try four different temperatures of water (indicated by different colors) to see if hot water moves measurably faster and cold water moves measurably slower

it's hard to find the Layers of the Earth and the Layers of the Atmosphere presented in the same scale...

so we create a diagram of our own

I present a follow-up lesson on Place Value to the Pterodactyls where I show them how to represent numbers with the Montessori Golden Bead Material

the numbers that we choose are from the Dr. Seuss story
