MMA - Ruth Asawa

This summer a tutoring client and I are going through the Magnificent Modern Art course from Art History Kids together. It's been really interesting so far. Art History isn't something I ever really learned about, so it's new to me. And so, of course, I'm going to keep some notes here as we go along!

This week it was Pop Art and the artist Andy Warhol.

Now I am preparing for our final artist! Next week we will be studying

other notes (my suggestions)

    The Lion and the Stoat

by Paul O. Zelinsky (chapter 2)

A Life Made by Hand: The Story of Ruth Asawa

    by Andrea D'Aquino

love the assignment for video 2: "work on paper, sand or soil"!

it would also be fun to do a continuous line drawing 3-D with a crochet hook and some undyed natural fiber yarn (or this may be a good use for the raffia someone donated and I've never used)... just keep going in and out of your own work until you feel like being done

lots of Nature walks would make sense when studying this artist... love her quote!

also, Ruth Asawa was best friends with Buckminster Fuller (whose geodesic dome house is in our town), so we could go and visit his home and see if any of her artwork is in it

I'm currently obsessed with the work of Hervé Tullet (and have been buying a bunch of his books searching for titles written all in capital letters for my 7 year old to read) and he has actually created a book that is perfect for the paper sculpture assignment for video 3!

    The Game of Sculpture

He also did a super-sized version!

    The Giant Game of Sculpture

    Item Weight: 1.9 pounds
    Dimensions: 12 x 1 x 17.2 inches

technically, this book is wordless but the instructions (on the back) are all in caps so I'm going to include it on my list

the lesson from SF MOMA she recommends

the video goes with these step-by-step instructions
