Aluminum Foil Fish

A favorite art project here, we've done this in the grade 1 Capital Letters block (N is for Net) and the grade 4 Timeline of Life block (Devonian Period).

R / River and N / Net illustrations are from LMNOP and All the Letters A to Z.

To begin, have the child use tracing paper to trace the desired pattern (I like the fish patterns from Feltcraft by Petra Berger). Then cut out the pattern.

Lay the pattern over the aluminum foil and trace around it, and cut the fish shape out of foil. This has the handy effect of also sharpening your scissors!

Then we place a piece of the net bag from potatoes/onions/glass gems underneath and color it with Sharpies (fine tip or ultra-fine tip). By rubbing it as you color, you get the scale texture on the little fish. You could also keep the fish silver and simply rub it with your fingernail to get the look of scales.

Use a bit of liquid glue to glue it to a piece of blue card stock. If you are doing N is for Net with your child, cut the piece of net bag into the shape of an N. Lay it overtop to "catch" the fish, and tape it in place with clear tape.

If you do not have Feltcraft, here are a few other sources for fish templates:
