Pawpaw Recipes

Thank you to my friend Megan and her husband for taking us to collect pawpaws on Sunday! They have seven different stands of pawpaw trees on their 28 acre property, so we came home with a VERY full grocery bag of fragrant ripe fruit...

several dozen ripe and ready to eat pawpaws!

Now we have genetically different pawpaw seeds which we can plant here to try to get our very own pawpaw patch! They're an understory plant, so it was really helpful to walk around the woods and see where they like to grow.

In my U.S. History course we are in Colonial America right now, so the pawpaw tree has impeccable timing!

Besides using it to have a Colonial Food experience as part of school, what else can we do with all of these pawpaws? With a notoriously short shelf life (going from ripe to rotten in just days), pawpaws must be used up quickly. This is my brainstorm space. Let me know if you have other links to share!!!

Kentucky State University has a webpage with lots of pawpaw recipes. Some that sound really good to me are Pawpaw Cookies with Black Walnuts, Pawpaw Pecan Bread, Pawpaw Jell-O, and Pawpaw-Pineapple Sherbet.

That website also answered my burning question, can I freeze pawpaw pulp?

"Add pawpaw pulp to your favorite vanilla milkshake recipe. One or two tablespoons of pawpaw pulp should suffice for two servings of milkshake. Pawpaw can be conveniently stored for this purpose by freezing spoonfuls of pulp on a cookie sheet, then storing them in a plastic bag after they have frozen solid."

Today we tried Pawpaw Jell-O and Pawpaw Fool and they were both a big hit. We used six pawpaws and had plenty of pulp. We pureed the pulp by putting it through an old-fashioned ricer. The Pawpaw Fool was my favorite!

    Pawpaw Jell-O

Make up a 6 oz box of lemon Jell-O according to package directions. Refrigerate until thickened to a syrupy consistency. Thoroughly stir in 2 cups of pureed pawpaw pulp. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

    Pawpaw Fool

Make sweetened whipped cream (1 cup very cold heavy whipping cream, 2 T granulated sugar, 1/3 tsp vanilla extract) and place in a bowl. Gently fold 1/2 cup of pawpaw puree into the whipped cream until just barely blended. Add another 1/2 cup of pawpaw puree to the mixture, folding 3 or 4 times. The idea is to leave large, attractive swirls of pawpaw puree throughout the mixture. Serve chilled.

Today we tried the Simple Pawpaw Salsa alongside tortilla chips. I did not add any chili pepper because I was making it for children. They really liked it, but I think the fruit would have been more balanced out by a bit of heat. Nonetheless, it was quickly polished off!
