Week Two Notes (week of Sep 12).
we wondered what would happen if the celery stalk was split and put into two different colors... would they blend?
no, the color seems to stay on one side of the celery!
it's interesting too to see celery with its root
sketching chrysalides
choosing professions to research
and gathering relevant resources (these are for the Apothecary)
time to make some pawpaw recipes!
we carefully save the seeds for germinating
I'd love to have a few pawpaw trees in my yard!
meanwhile, in the Art Room, the younger children come up with the idea of making fairies
they really are quite adorable
an assessment... I ask the children to write the capital letters A to Z as best as they can remember them
the letter J is the one most often reversed, so we focus on it this week
organization - caddies
organization - plan books
sundial experiments
orienteering pacing
sketching the pawpaws before we cut them up for salsa

helping a friend
checking the "Wristwatch as a Compass" trick
this works best when the sun is low in the sky
align the hour hand with the direction of the sun
find the shortest curve between the hour hand and the 12 (either direction)
the midpoint of that curve is SOUTH
the daily notes for the plan books; the blank space is for children to write in their individual choices during Independent Work Time
I find 6 more of my favorite vintage circular protractors on eBay - NOS!
I love how they have North, South, East, and West on them
I'm keeping track this year of exactly how much I spend on supplies:
looking at the circle so closely is a great opportunity to review reading an analog clock
practicing shoe tying
spaghetti angles!
I learned this lesson years ago (2001) when I was teaching 4th grade
it is so perfect here...
they had a semicircular protractor and had to do the math for angles greater than 180... then they could check their work against the
circular protractor
match the colored side of the arrows with the artwork on the mat
then flip them over and read the steps in the cycle
testing acidity with litmus paper
the Miracle Berry Experiment
sneaking in a quick knitting lesson at the end of the day!
this turtle was heading 240 degrees at a brisk pace
and the children found it at the perfect time, right when I was introducing how to use a compass
the Coin Game
experimenting with wire sculptures after learning about Alexander Calder
pipe cleaners are great for a "rough draft"
and they will have beautiful colored crafting wire to work with on Monday
the pawpaw shape abstracted as a symmetrical drawing
this child is also working with symmetry in his counted cross-stitch design
casting on for the Horse pattern
