Week 15 Notes

World Religions Week 1

I am really excited about this month! The older children are doing a block on World Religions, and the younger children have a block of Jataka Tales.


Monday, Jan 2

    SSR

    taste Kaua'i Sugarloaf White Hawaiian Pineapple in Foods of the World (Oceania)

    Math for Plastic Utensils - Weekly Math Packet grade 6 & grade 8, play Battleship

    Math for Pterodactyls - read Journey to Cahokia: A Boy's Visit to the Great Mound City by Albert Lorenz and discuss the idea of a fair trade (in preparation for dynamic addition), string popcorn for the birds, carefully record number of pieces of popcorn on each child's string

    Snack - read Porcupine chapter of All Creation Waits by Gayle Boss

    Lunch - read Common Eastern Firefly chapter

    Art Party - finish 2023 calendar artwork (Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov)

    send home finished calendars


Tuesday, Jan 3

    SSR

    introduce The Animal Game, start to brainstorm a list of animals and what letter they might begin and end with, draw animal pictures and label them with "best guess spelling"

    begin Weather Tree from All Year Round

    Math for Plastic Utensils - Weekly Math Packet grade 6 & grade 8

    Math for Pterodactyls - use the Golden Bead Material to add the four numbers from yesterday (140 pieces of popcorn!), hang the popcorn strings outside for the birds

    Art History - finish up Jackson Pollock-inspired artwork (outside)

    Snack - read Meadow Vole chapter

    Jataka Tale - read The Monkey and the Crocodile retold by Paul Galdone

    Knit

    Lunch - read Eastern Fox Squirrel chapter

    Board Games - Pengoloo, Bugs in the Kitchen, Scrabble, Bananagrams

    Math for Plastic Utensils - Weekly Math Packet grade 6 & grade 8

    Math for Pterodactyls - read Christmas Farm by Mary Lyn Ray (in preparation for multiplication as repeat addition)

    Snack - read Red Fox chapter

    New Math Game - Pica, Firma, Nada (page 14 of PDF)

    the children really enjoyed this game! it is similar to Wordle and Mastermind, but you're finding the digits in a mystery number

    Lunch - read Northern Cardinal chapter

    Kindness Curriculum lesson 1 - bell meditation, noticing the breath, paper straws & cotton balls

    World Religions: Buddhism - color mandalas

    Art History: Ruth Asawa - read A Life Made by Hand: The Story of Ruth Asawa by Andrea D'Aquino

    Math for Plastic Utensils - Weekly Math Packet grade 6 & grade 8

    Math for Pterodactyls - recall Christmas Farm by Mary Lyn Ray, solve 83 x 12 using repeat addition and the Golden Bead Material (the children each solved 16 x 12, I solved 19 x 12, then we added it up)

    Jataka Tales - do artwork for "The Monkey and the Crocodile," read The Brave Little Parrot retold by Rafe Martin

    Snack - read Lake Trout chapter and the end of All Creation Waits

    World Religions: Buddhism - read "Buddha, the Enlightened One" from Charles Kovacs book, Ancient Mythologies (pp.75-87)

    - The Gentle Prince Sidhartha
    - Journeys Beyond the Palace Wall
    - A Meeting with Death
    - Sidhartha, the Homeless Beggar
