I came across a mention of The Story of a Castle by John S. Goodall when Zac and I were watching Reading Rainbow and when I went to look into this book more, I discovered that this author did a LOT of wordless picture books! So I am really excited.
Here are the picture books I found that seem -- based on the reviews -- to be wordless. I will update as I get them and see. Sometimes picture books are described as wordless when they aren't quite. However, sometimes if there are only a few words, those words are all in caps, and I have a list of those books too. Both lists are perfect for Waldorf first grade children!
These are all set in England.
The Story of an English Village
The Midnight Adventures of Kelly, Dot, and Esmeralda
Shrewbettina Goes to Work: A Pop-Up Story
Naughty Nancy
originally titled, "Naughty Nancy: The Bad Bridesmaid"
The Ballooning Adventures of Paddy Pork
Paddy Finds a Job: A Pop-Up Story
Before the War, 1908-1939: An Autobiography in Pictures
According to this blurb on Amazon,
- "John S. Goodall was born in Norfolk, England, and began to draw and paint when he was four years old. He attended the Royal Academy School of Art in London and began painting in watercolors in India during World War II. Upon his return to England, he painted portraits of members of the royal family. Mr. Goodall created his first children's books informally for his daughter and granddaughter, devising a new format in which he alternated full and half pages of watercolor illustration. In all, Goodall created more than thirty-five wordless picture books for children, including stories about Paddy Pork, Shrewbettina, and Naughty Nancy, as well as such titles as The Story of a Farm, The Story of a Main Street, and Great Days of a Country House."
I'm very excited to have found his work! Let me know if there are other titles.
