I am really excited about this month! The older children are doing a block on World Religions, and the younger children have a block of Jataka Tales.

Week 1 - Buddhism

Monday, Jan 9

Morning Math for Plastic Utensils
(Fraction Finders #16, Algebra Antics #1, pp.8-9 of PDF)

Jataka Tales - create artwork for "The Brave Little Parrot" (colored pencil forest fire, blue cardstock raindrops), add sentence (rough draft with invented spelling, get an edit, write final version into MLB)

Snack Story - read The Hermit and the Well by Thich Nhat Hanh



Read Aloud at Lunch - The Cat Who Went to Heaven, chap 1 & 2



Board Games - Rhyme Out, Pick-up Sticks (using Colored Bead Bars to calculate score)

Kindness Curriculum lesson 2 - read The Empty Pot, start seeds (broccoli sprouts)



World Religions: Buddhism - watch documentary on life of Buddha (Genius of the Ancient World, season 1, episode 1), take notes, discuss key points, begin rough draft of Buddhism

Art History: Ruth Asawa - make designs in dirt with bare feet

Tuesday, Jan 10

Morning Math for Plastic Utensils
Basic Skills, 2nd 6 weeks, week 2

play Dominoes (using Golden Bead Material to calculate score)

Read Aloud at Lunch - The Cat Who Went to Heaven, chap 3

World Religions: Buddhism - finish rough draft of Buddhism, get an edit, add to MLB, review the Buddhism three part cards

World Religions: Hinduism - take Hinduism pretest (page 1 of PDF), discuss answers, read The Magic Cooking Pot (the goddess Durga)

read from Kovacs book, Ancient Mythologies (pp.7-12 and 17-27)
- King Sangara's Horse
- Indra, the Warrior God
- The Fishermen's Catch



make a list of deities on the chalkboard

read Ganesha's Sweet Tooth by Sanjay Patel & Emily Haynes (Mahabharata)



add Ganesha (son of Shiva and Durga) and Lakshmi (wife of Vishnu) to list on the board

finish rough draft of Hinduism

read Priya Dreams of Marigolds & Masala by Meenal Patel



assign children individual picture books to read, have them each share a bit about their story -- and how they think it ties in with Hinduism -- at the end of the day
