Week Four Photos

These photos go with the post Week Four Notes (week of Sep 26).

copying and illustrating poems has become a favorite Penmanship practice

our stories for X and V

our basket of treasures (Grimm's Wooden Forest Set)

hiding a treasure, then drawing a map of its location for a friend

hmmm... where is that treasure?

our finished butterfly mobile

the lithograph "Balloons" by Alexander Calder

on our way to the art museum, we discover this ginkgo tree with fruit on it!

I pull out my box of rocks from grade 1 Land of Numeria...

to create a collection of Alphabet Rocks!

after drawing the uppercase letters on the sidewalk with chalk, we match the Alphabet Rocks to the chalk letters

colonial professions research continues

our goldenrod dye jar (which actually ended up giving no color)

I repurpose the frame from our broken folding table by covering it with cheesecloth

now I have a lovely and airy drying table for when we wash raw wool as part of our Living History experience

setting up the Orienteering Course

the copper plant labels are beautiful but a little too subtle

the children asked me to make the signs more noticeable next time we do this activity

individual portions of tiny seashells

tracing your name with your finger on the paper first helps you figure out how big to make the letters so that it will all fit

they enjoyed the challenge of making the letters by squeezing out liquid glue

these came out really well and were a great way to practice the capitalization rules as well as our lowercase letters

knitting

braiding

sewing

the "Sandpipers" poem really went so beautifully with this activity!

Firefly July: A Year of Very Short Poems edited by Paul Janeczko, p.19

the colored portions are the stitches from when she was in first grade

the black line (below) shows off the stitches from today

measuring the sections on the Golden Mat so we can use the same measurements for our Octal Mat (which will be dark brown felt)

practicing multiplication on the Golden Mat (in fact, they were using it to calculate the exponents of 8)

everyone was interested in this lesson, so it ended up being a group project

Science Club

the red balloon was the warm water; the blue balloon was the cold water

both bottles have the same amount of water and Alka-Seltzer in them

which temperature water held in the CO2 and was a better carbon sink?

we decide to make the Binary Mat first, since that project is a bit simpler

he had so much fun calculating the exponents, he just kept going!

our final Alexander Calder activity is a look at his gouache paintings

getting out the bricks for the Dragon Party!
these bags of bricks live in my upper attic and only come out once a year

the bricks are carefully transported to the building site

the castle wall serves as the backdrop to our retelling of the story

it is a great collaborative project

the tale begins...

the knight falls at the end of day 1
(the sparkly scarf is the stream of silvery healing water)

our cheerful narrators

the dragon cape is a favorite costume

this dragon is particularly fierce

townspeople cowering behind the ruined Brass Tower

they have so much fun, they just want to act it out over and over
